Caring for Your Tattoo From Day One and Beyond

Tattoo Aftercare at Little Pricks Tattoo

Getting a tattoo is only part of the process. How you care for it afterward plays a big role in how it heals, how it looks, and how it ages over time. This aftercare guide reflects the same professional standards we follow in the studio, with clear steps and practical advice you can understand.

Why Aftercare Matters: Heal Your Skin, Protect The Art

A fresh tattoo is an open wound. Proper aftercare helps prevent infection, reduces the risk of scarring, and allows the skin to heal evenly. Good care also protects the quality of the artwork, keeping lines clear and color settled as your tattoo becomes part of you.

Immediate Aftercare

The First 24 Hours

The first day matters more than most people realize. Follow these steps carefully. These steps help protect the skin while the surface begins to close and heal.

  • Keep the bandage on for the amount of time your artist recommends.
  • Always wash your hands before touching your tattoo.
  • Gently clean the area using mild, fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water.
  • Pat the tattoo dry with a clean paper towel. Do not rub.
  • Apply a very thin layer of the aftercare product recommended by your artist.
  • Wear loose, clean clothing and avoid friction against the tattoo.

Short-Term Healing

Days 2 Through 14

  • You may notice redness and tenderness, especially in the first few days.
  • Light scabbing or flaking can occur as the skin renews itself.
  • Itching is common. Avoid scratching, even when it feels tempting.
  • The tattoo may look dull or cloudy before it settles and clears.

Protect Your Tattoo During Recovery: What to Avoid

These precautions help reduce irritation and protect the integrity of the tattoo.

  • Avoid swimming, soaking, or submerging the tattoo in water.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure.
  • Do not pick, scratch, or peel scabs or flakes.
  • Avoid heavy sweating when possible, especially during the first week.
  • Do not use petroleum-based products.
  • Avoid dirty or dusty environments that could introduce bacteria.

Keep Your Tattoo Looking Its Best: Long-Term Care

Once your tattoo is fully healed, ongoing care helps it age well. Regular moisturizing keeps the skin healthy and flexible. Use sunscreen when the tattoo is exposed to the sun, as UV light is one of the biggest causes of fading. Staying hydrated and caring for your skin supports long lasting clarity and color.

Signs of Infection: When To Pay Attention

Contact a medical professional if you experience any of the following:

  • Excessive swelling or spreading redness
  • Yellow or green discharge
  • Severe or worsening pain after several days
  • Fever or chills

If you are unsure whether something is normal, you can always contact the shop, and we will help guide you.
